How body fat is estimated

The US Navy method estimates body fat from your height and circumference measurements. Men use neck and waist; women also use the hip. It applies a logarithmic formula validated against the US Navy standard. It is an estimate, not a substitute for a DEXA scan.

How to use it

Measure your neck, waist (and hip for women) with a tape measure, keeping it snug and level. Enter your height and measurements and your estimated body fat percentage and category appear instantly.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the US Navy method?
It is typically within about 3–4% of more advanced methods when measurements are taken carefully.
Where do I measure my waist?
Men measure at the navel; women at the narrowest point. Keep the tape level and do not pull it tight.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Roughly 10–20% for men and 18–28% for women is considered healthy, varying with age and fitness.
Why is body fat better than BMI?
Body fat percentage reflects composition directly, so it is more meaningful than BMI for athletic or muscular people.
