How ideal weight is calculated

The Devine, Robinson and Hamwi formulas all start from a base weight at 5 ft (152 cm) of height and add a fixed amount of weight for each inch above that. Men and women use different constants. We show all three plus their average, because there is no single agreed definition of ideal weight.

How to use it

Enter your gender and height. The three formulas and their average appear instantly. Treat the result as a reference band rather than an exact target, and consider body composition too.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula is best?
There is no single best one; they were designed for medication dosing, not aesthetics. The average gives a reasonable reference.
Does ideal weight account for muscle?
No. These formulas use only height and sex, so muscular people may sit above their 'ideal' yet be perfectly healthy.
Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?
Not exactly. The healthy BMI range (see the BMI calculator) is usually a wider and more practical target.
Should I aim exactly for this number?
No. Use it as guidance alongside body fat, fitness and how you feel, not as a strict goal.
